The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, also known as IC 1396, is a dense, dark molecular cloud located in the constellation Cepheus, approximately 2,400 light-years away from Earth. This nebula is part of a larger complex known as the Emission Nebula IC 1396, which spans around 80 light-years. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula gets its name from its distinct shape, which resembles an elephant's trunk, with a curved, elongated structure that extends from the larger nebula. It is a site of active star formation, with young, hot stars embedded within the cloud, causing the surrounding gas and dust to glow. The nebula's dark, dense structure is formed by the gravitational collapse of the molecular cloud, which leads to the formation of new stars. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a popular target for astrophotographers due to its striking visual appearance and the contrast between the dark nebula and the glowing emission nebula surrounding it.
