Description
The Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) is a dense, elongated dark globule embedded within the larger IC 1396 emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus, located approximately 2,400 light-years from Earth. Composed of cold interstellar gas and dust, this photodissociation region appears as a sinuous silhouette against the surrounding ionized hydrogen emission, sculpted by intense ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from the nearby massive star system HD 206267. The structure serves as an active site of triggered star formation, harboring several embedded protostars and young stellar objects within its dense, photoevaporation-resistant cores while its outer layers are progressively eroded by the harsh radiation field.
